Rawlings' Death: Mahama Signs Book of Condolence

Former President John Mahama yesterday signed the Book OF Condolence opened by the state in honour of Former President Jerry John Rawlings who passed away last Thursday morning at the age of 73. He was accompanied by his wife, Former First Lady Lordina Mahama.

The Former President who is also the Presidential Candidate of the NDC in next month's general election earlier of Friday signed the Book of Condolence opened by the NDC at the party's headquarters in Kokomemle. This was after he was told at the State House where he had gone to sign the Book OF Condolence opened by the state that he could do that only on Monday (yesterday).

Sunday night saw Mahama and his wife, Lordina, at a vigil organized by the party in Accra. It was attended by thousands of Ghanaians especially party supporters. Paying tribute to the late former President who is the founder of the NDC, Mahama said Rawlings was not one who craved for fame and thus refused to have monuments or statues built in his honour. Instead, he preferred to remain in people's hearts.

Rawlings will be mostly remembered for the June 4th Revolt, the 31st December coup, Ghana's fourth Republic and the NDC. Other dignitaries were also at the Accra International Conference Centre to sign the Book of Condolence. They include Former Foreign Minister Madam Hanna Tetteh, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Michael Ocquaye, the Chief Justice, Justice Anin-Yeboah among others.
